Full Stuck Developer: The Full Stack Joke Explained

A full stack developer works on every layer of a web application: the front end in the browser, the back end on the server, and the database behind it. A full stuck developer is stuck on all of them at the same time. One letter changes the job title into a confession, and every full stack developer has had that week.

Full stack vs full stuck

A “stack” is the set of technologies that run an application, one on top of the other. A classic example is LAMP: Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. A full stack developer can work at any level of that pile, from a CSS bug to a slow SQL query.

That breadth is the selling point. It is also the joke. If you work on every layer, you can get stuck on every layer, and the hardest bugs live where two layers meet.

LayerFull stackFull stuck
Front endBuilds the interface with HTML, CSS and JavaScriptCentring a div, again
APIConnects the browser to the serverCORS error, and nobody knows which side to fix
Back endBusiness logic in PHP, Python, Node, Java…Works locally, fails on the server
DatabaseDesigns tables and queriesA migration that runs in dev and locks the table in production
DeploymentShips the app to servers or the cloudThe pipeline is green and the site is down

The most full stuck bug of all: CORS

If one error defines the full stuck developer, it is this one. The front end runs on localhost:3000, the API on localhost:8000, and the browser refuses the request:

Access to fetch at 'http://localhost:8000/api/users' from origin
'http://localhost:3000' has been blocked by CORS policy: No
'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.

The error shows up in the front end, so front-end developers try to fix it there. It cannot be fixed there. CORS is a browser security rule: the server must say which origins may read its responses. Different ports count as different origins, even on the same machine. If localhost is a mystery, start with There’s no place like 127.0.0.1.

In an Express back end, the fix is one middleware on the server side:

import express from 'express';
import cors from 'cors';

const app = express();
app.use(cors({ origin: 'http://localhost:3000' }));

That is the full stuck experience in miniature: the symptom on one layer, the cause on another, and you are responsible for both.

Why the joke lands

Job ads ask for full stack developers as if one person could master every layer. In practice, most full stack developers are strong on one side and good enough on the other. When something breaks on their weaker side, they become full stuck.

The joke is also kind. It admits something every developer feels and few put on a CV: being stuck is part of the job. Senior developers are not people who never get stuck. They are people who get unstuck faster.

How to get unstuck

  • Find the layer first. Open the browser’s network tab: did the request leave? What status came back? That splits front-end bugs from back-end bugs in a minute.
  • Reproduce the problem with the smallest input. A curl call to the API skips the whole front end.
  • Read the full error message, not just the first line.
  • Explain the problem to someone, or to a duck. Rubber duck debugging works on every layer.
  • When it suddenly works, find out why. Otherwise you are only stuck later, as in It works, why?.

Asking an AI assistant can help too, as long as you understand the answer before you ship it. A fix you cannot explain is how a full stuck developer becomes a vibe coder.

Where the joke comes from

We found no documented origin for “full stuck developer”. It is wordplay that circulates on developer forums, stickers and shirts. If you know an early, dated use of the pun, we would like to see it.

The shirt

Our Full Stuck Developer shirt prints the title in three coloured blocks, like a stack. It is one of the easiest designs to give to a developer you love: they will get it in one second. More in our developer t-shirts.
